Elle Maguire, a graduate of Coleg Menai has recently cut the ribbon to her second salon at Anglesey, adding to the success of her first establishment “The Hair Bar” in Bangor.
This 27-year old woman harboured aspirations to become a hairdressing lecturer during her college years. However, the spark to pursue this path was ignited when she was working at Regis – a prominent hairdressing brand in the UK.
“I used to instruct trainees at Regis, and I loved doing it. So that’s why I decided to pursue teaching,” Ele expressed.
Student Became an Entrepreneur:
Elle’s journey began when she enrolled herself in the college to pursue her PGCE to get qualified as a lecturer in hairdressing. Consequently, she pursued the Level 1 Diploma in Hairdressing at the Coleg Menai College in 2013, followed by the completion of the Level 3 course two years later.
Speaking of her college experience, Elle expressed that she had an array of opportunities on her hands, including training with the Hair Extension Academy, and participating in various college competitions. Notably, during her Level 3 course, she won the college competition and got through to compete in Blackpool.
“We also had trips to Salon International in London, and the opportunities to watch the Alternative Hair show at the Albert Hall. These were amazing opportunities to network with other hairdressers, meet brands, and see the latest equipment. And, they are memories I’ll never forget,” added Elle.
While attending college once a week to pursue her Level 2 Diploma in Barbering through an apprenticeship, Elle concurrently gained hands-on experience at ‘Mr Maxwell’s’ in Bangor and ‘Fusion’ in Benllech. The valuable skills acquired during her tenure at these salons secured her a position at Regis, where she worked for three years.
Elle realized her passion for ‘passing her skills to others’ while working at Regis. This passion inspired her to open her own salon when she faced redundancy in 2019.
“I didn’t really have a lot of choice,” Elle said.
She added, “After redundancy, I didn’t know what to do, but being surrounded by a family that has always been self-employed, I felt that it was the only way to step forward in my career.”
In 2020, Elle finally established her own salon – “The Hair Bar.” But soon, the pandemic wreaked havoc on her business. However, it didn’t shatter the inner spirit of Elle, who confidently reopened the salon in July of that year, and passed her Level 4 qualification.
Elle said, “Work placements have been the key to my career.”
“Something I have realised is that you might not always have a goal or a direction in your life. And, that’s completely okay. But grab every opportunity as you never know what it could lead to in the future.”
“There’s no pressure to be the best, but as long as you try your best, your tutors and future employers will see that and they will be able to give you the direction you need” – Elle.
